QUALITY REQUIREMENTS FOR STEEL FLANGES

Flange inspection is an essential quality control requirement to ensure leak-proof performance and compliance with ASME, ASTM, DIN, EN, and API standards. Inspections are carried out before welding, during machining, and before final dispatch to ensure product reliability in piping systems, storage tanks, fittings, and spools.

Visual Inspection of STEEL Flanges

Purpose: To detect external or surface defects that may reduce flange strength or sealing capability.

Steps:

  • Check the overall surface condition: no rust, porosity, pitting, or contamination.
  • Inspect the flange facing: no dents, scratches, or tool marks on RF, FF, or RTJ faces. 
  • Verify bolt holes: clean edges, no burrs, correct alignment.
  • Inspect for cracks or laminations, especially around the hub and transition areas. Perform penetrant testing if necessary.
  • Confirm markings and traceability: size, pressure class, grade, heat number, standard, and manufacturer identification.
  • Examine weld neck area on welding neck flanges: no undercut, grinding marks, or deformities.
  • Ensure the flange face is flat with no deformation or warpage.

Dimensional Inspection of F STEEL FLANGES

Purpose: To verify adherence to dimensional tolerances and machining accuracy as per standards.

Dimensional measuring instruments recommended:

  • Vernier caliper or digital caliper
  • Height gauge
  • Feeler gauge and straight edge
  • Bevel protractor
  • Radius gauge
  • Pi or measuring tape
     

Key dimensions to check:

  • Outer diameter of flange
  • Inner diameter or bore to match pipe connections
  • Flange thickness as per pressure design
  • Raised Face OD & height (1.6 mm for Class 150-300 / 6.4 mm for Class 400-2500)
  • Neck dimensions for weld neck flange
  • Hub dimensions for slipon, socketweld, threaded & lap joint flange
  • Total height of flange
  • Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD) and number of bolt holes
  • Bolt hole diameter and spacing
  • Flatness or runout to avoid leakage during gasket compression
  • Chamfer or spot facing where required

ASME B16.5 / ASME B16.47 / MSS SP-44 / AWWA C207 / DIN EN 1092-1

Gasket Contact Surface and Roughness Verification OF STEEL FLANGES

Facing type and required roughness:

  • Raised Face (RF): 3.2–6.3 microns (better sealing)
  • Flat Face (FF): 1.6–3.2 microns (soft gasket compatibility)
  • Ring Type Joint (RTJ): less than 1.6 microns (metallic sealing)

Ensure concentric or spiral serrations are uniform and within the required finish range.

Alignment and Fit-Up Check OF STEEL FLANGES

To ensure proper connection during installation:

  • Gasket seating should be uniform and free from misalignment.
  • Bolts should pass smoothly across opposite holes.
  • Hub centricity must be accurate for weld neck flanges.
  • The pipe must fit into the bore without interference or step mismatch.

Documentation and Quality Compliance OF STEEL FLANGES

After inspection, maintain:

  • Visual inspection report
  • Dimensional inspection report
  • Heat number traceability record
  • Surface finish and NDT reports (if applicable)
  • Material Test Certificates (EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2)
