Stainless Steel Plates and other flat-rolled stainless steel products are generally classified under HSN Heading 7219 when the width is 600 mm or more. The applicable 8-digit HSN/Customs Tariff Item depends on the plate's thickness, width and manufacturing condition (hot-rolled/cold-rolled). Common tariff items include 72191200, 72191300, 72191400, 72192190, 72192290, 72192390, 72192490, 72193290, 72193390, 72193490 and 72199090, as applicable.
The weight of a Stainless Steel Plate can be calculated using its length, width, thickness and material density. For most commercial calculations, the density of standard austenitic stainless steel is approximately 8.00 g/cm³.
For dimensions in millimetres (mm):
Weight (kg) = Length (mm) × Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000
For a commonly used density of 8.00 g/cm³:
Weight (kg) = L × W × T × 8.00 ÷ 1,000,000
Suppose you have an SS 304 Stainless Steel Plate with:
Calculation:
2,500 × 1,250 × 10 × 8.00 ÷ 1,000,000
= 250.00 kg
Therefore, the theoretical weight of the plate is approximately:
250.00 kg

The Stainless Steel Plate Price in India depends on the grade, thickness, dimensions, surface finish, manufacturing condition, quantity, manufacturer, testing requirements and current stainless steel market conditions. Stainless steel plates are generally quoted on a per kilogram (₹/kg) basis for commercial and industrial requirements.
Alliance Pipes & Fittings supplies ASTM A240 / ASME SA240 Stainless Steel Plates from Mumbai, India, in various grades, sizes, thicknesses and finishes, subject to stock availability and customer requirements.
Indicative market prices can vary significantly between grades and specifications. As a general 2026 market reference, published Indian sources indicate approximately ₹190–₹280/kg for SS 304 plates, while SS 316 and other alloyed grades can be considerably higher. These figures are indicative only and should not be considered a firm quotation.
1. Stainless Steel Grade
The grade has a major influence on the price. SS 304 and 304L are generally more economical than higher-alloy grades such as SS 316L, 904L, Duplex, Super Duplex and 254 SMO.
2. Nickel, Chromium & Molybdenum Content
Changes in alloying-element costs can influence stainless steel pricing. Grades containing higher amounts of nickel and molybdenum can have higher material costs.
3. Plate Thickness
The required thickness affects the product category, manufacturing process, availability and overall price. Thin sheets and heavy plates may have different pricing structures.
4. Plate Size
Length and width, including non-standard or oversized dimensions, can affect availability, processing requirements and price.
5. Surface Finish
Finish requirements such as No. 1, 2B, BA, No. 4, Hairline or Mirror can influence the final price depending on the grade, thickness and processing required.
6. Manufacturer / Mill
The manufacturer or mill can influence pricing based on grade availability, certification, quality requirements, production route and material origin.
7. Quantity
Bulk project quantities may receive different commercial pricing compared with small quantities. Minimum order quantities can also vary by grade and size.
8. Testing & Certification
Additional inspection and testing requirements can affect the final price. These may include EN 10204 3.1 MTC, IGC testing, ASTM A262 Practice A or Practice E, UT/NDT, Z-Test, NACE requirements and project-specific inspection.
9. Cutting & Processing
Cut-to-size plates, CNC cutting, profile cutting and other processing requirements can add to the material cost.
10. Freight, GST & Delivery Location
The final landed price can vary depending on freight, packing, GST and delivery location. Mumbai ex-stock pricing can therefore differ from delivered pricing to other cities or export destinations.
Because stainless steel prices can change with market conditions, Alliance Pipes & Fittings provides quotations based on the exact grade, thickness, size, quantity, finish, testing and delivery requirements.
